The new owner of the Thrifty Car & Van Rental UK franchise, Scot Group Ltd has come a long way, over the last 35 years. Scot Group is a family run Company, which commenced trading in 1971 with a fleet of three Mark II Cortinas, one Escort and five commercial vehicles, all of which were second hand.

The Company, initially called Scot Hire, began as a partnership between Clive Spokes and Maureen Bull, which was run from their home. Clive completed all the vehicle maintenance and Maureen ran the administrative side of the business.In 1973 they were able to rent a small office in a garage in Exeter, with 4 parking spaces.

In 1976 negotiations were started to purchase the company’s first site.

In June 1979 Scot Hire made its first bulk purchase, six Vauxhall Chevettes. Expansion has continued, ever since, with new branches being opened and the vehicle fleet growing in number as the years have gone by: Today Scot Group Ltd runs an average fleet of 9,000 cars, and 3,000 vans and minibuses.

Back in 1996 the Company also changed its name from Rotacell Ltd T/A Scot Hire to Scot Group Ltd T/A Scot Hire to encompass all areas of the growing business and in 1999 Nigel Spokes assumed a controlling interest in the Company. Whilst remaining a private family-owned concern, the business is now operated by the current board comprising of Chairman Nigel Spokes, Managing Director Roger Hancock and Financial Director Peter Granados.

The company launched Scot Prestige in 2003, which now offers Customers the choice of renting vehicles from extensive Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW and Volvo product. This part of the Company is now incorporated into the Thrifty brand.

In 2005 the Company was offered the opportunity to acquire the UK master franchise for Thrifty Car & Van Rental in the UK and it was decided the opportunity with Thrifty was too good to miss. So on 1st April 2006 Scot Group became Scot Group T/A Thrifty Car & Van Rental. As owner of the Thrifty master franchise for the UK it has enabled the Company to grow on a far greater scale than ever before and we intend to one day become the leader in vehicle rental in the UK. With such growth will come increased career opportunity and security for each of our employees, upon whom the Company’s future success depends.

Thrifty currently have 90 locations within the UK and the Head Office of the Company is based at 12 Marsh Barton Road, Exeter where the Accounts, Personnel, Insurance, Fleet and Car Sales departments are based. There is also a Central Office in High Wycombe which houses the Sales, Reservation and Credit Control functions and a refurbishment site where the majority of the Company's maintenance and accident repairs are carried out based in Nuneaton.

Thrifty UK Rental Terms for travel between 09-Feb-2015 and 31-Dec-2019

Vehicle makes and models cannot be guaranteed. Terms are subject to change with prior notification.

Rates include:
CDW (unless otherwise stated on rate schedule),VAT, & 3rd party liability.  Damage to wheels and tyres, windscreens, underside, roof and interior of vehicle are not covered by CDW

Rates Exclude:
Unlimited mileage, Fuel, Delivery/Collection, Parking, OOH, One way, Overseas, Additional drivers, Young/senior driver surcharge, child seats, glass and tyre cover, SCDW - Super Collision Damage Waiver, PAI - Personal Accident Insurance, out of hours, maps and mobile phones.

Mileage Limitations:
500 free miles per week or part thereof e.g:
1-7 days = 500 miles
8-14 days = 1000 miles
15-21 days = 1500 miles
22-28 days = 2000 miles
28 days+ = 2000 miles per 28 day period pro rata length of hire, e.g:
29 days = 2000/28 then x29 giving a mileage allowance of 2071
Excess mileage will be charged depending on vehicle type as per the attached schedule dated Jan 15

Please note Thrifty reserves the right to terminate any high mileage rental at any time

Overseas Use:
1. All cars (other than Prestige, Luxury & Elite models), people carriers with fewer than 8 seats (including the driver) and commercial vehicles up to 3.5tonne LWB) may be taken outside the UK to the following countries only:-
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Channel Islands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (excluding Ceuta and Melilla), Sweden and Switzerland
2. An overseas surcharge will be applied when taking vehicles outside of the UK which includes provision of vehicle documentation legally required (form VE103, which indicates approved drivers and limit of countries to be visited) and European breakdown cover (full policy will be given at commencement of hire - certain exclusions apply)
3. There is a mileage limit on rentals during which the vehicle is driven overseas as follows:-
1 - 6 days 200 miles per day
7 days + 700 miles per week + 100 miles per additional day
Any miles driven in excess of these limits will be charged at 15 pence per mile (including VAT) at the end of the rental
4. Excess waiver products are not available on rentals during which the vehicle is driven overseas

Renter Qualifications
Min. Age of Driver: 21
Max. Age of Driver: n/a

Valid drivers license issued by country of residence must have been held for at least:
1 year (Endorsements should be checked with Thrifty prior to pick up)

Any other Requirements:
Young driver charge applies for age groups 21-24.  This age group is only eligible to drive groups M1, M2, M3, M4 A2, A3, A4 and E3.

Please note that all renters must hold a major credit card or UK issued debit card which must be presented at time of rental.  Cash, cheque or pre paid credit cards are not accepted at any location.

Credit Card Payment:
A deposit of £150 (economy to standard size cars) will be charged at start of hire
A deposit of £300 (full size to prestige – excluding prestige 4x4s) will be charged at start of hire

Debit Card Payment: 
A deposit of £150 will be charged at start of hire plus the value of the vehicle excess
A deposit of £300 (full size to prestige – excluding prestige 4x4s) will be charged at start of hire

To rent a Prestige 4x4, Luxury or Elite vehicle the customer must be aged 30 or over and customer must be able to produce 2 credit cards in their own name at time of pick up
For all Prestige 4x4, Luxury and Elite rentals payments must be made by credit card only - debit cards cannot be accepted. The credit card will be required for the value of the excess up to £5000 plus the cost of the hire charges or incremental charges

Elite vehicle bookings will attract a cancellation or no show fee as detailed below:

If cancellation is more than 2 working weekdays before pick up  No Charge
If cancellation is between 1 and 2 working weekdays before pick up 1 day rental charge
If cancellation is less than 1 working weekday before pick up  2 days rental charges

If customer “no shows” or does not provide the correct ID, payment method or fails a security check and the hire cannot proceed 2 days rental charges will apply

ID Requirements:
Identification required if UK Resident
When collecting the vehicle, the Lead Driver must present:
a valid driving licence.  If old (paper-only) style, official photo ID must also be presented.  If new (photocard + counterpart) style, both parts required. We cannot accept an expired photocard (see Driving Licences section for further details)
If the licence does not show current home address (this includes licences issued in EU countries and driver resides in UK), valid passport or national identity card must be presented
2 additional forms of ID to confirm current home address.  One must be the credit card or bank statement for the credit or debit card being presented for deposit and additional charges.  The other should be a formal document (eg utility bill, council tax bill etc) - both must be dated within 8 weeks of date of hire.

Insurance Terms:
Drivers must meet the locations insurance terms in order to rent a vehicle.  The rental location reserves the right to refuse a hire if the driver does not meet their insurance conditions.  We are unable to rent to students under the age of 23, professional entertainers, professional sports people, trainers and managers.  Some medical conditions may not be covered by our insurance.

Fuel Policy
All vehicles are supplied with a tank of fuel at the start of hire. Customers may:
Purchase this tank of furl at a preferential rate and return the vehicle empty, or
Return the vehicle full at the end of the rental, or
Return the vehicle part full and be charged for missing fuel at the end of the rental at the locally determined price. Please note a surcharge will be applied for this facility

Driving Restrictions
Geographical Driving Restrictions:  Northern Ireland, EU Countries, additional charge will apply for overseas cover at counter.

Central London Congestion Charge:  
An ticket must be purchased in advance from a designated retailer for drivers wishing to enter Central London area.  Please refer to www.cclondon.com or call 0845 9001234.  Please note that if the renter does not purchase a ticket, they will be liable for any fines incurred.

Customer Liability
All bookings are subject to the Terms & Conditions above, the rental of any vehicle is subject to the laws governing the country of rental.  Renters will be asked to sign a rental agreement before taking the vehicle, rental locations reserve the right to refuse rental to anyone who is or appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  A major credit card is required at the time of rental as a guarantee of payment of any customer liabilities and will be debited in the event of such damage.  Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is subject to an excess, unless advised by the rental location otherwise.  Exclusions from CDW include without limit, damage to wheels and tyres, windscreen, underside of vehicle, roof of vehicle and any damage to the interior of the vehicle.  In addition any damaged caused as a result of driving the vehicle off-road or on roads with no tarmac, negligently or without due care and attention is also excluded from CDW cover.  This excess liability can be reduced if the customer takes out Super CDW cover. Please note that CDW/Super CDW does not cover the cost of towing the vehicle or any traffic/road fines incurred during the rental period, all traffic/road fines incurred during the rental period remain the sole responsibility of the renter.  Any damaged caused to vehicle as a result of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is not covered by any insurance policies and all costs resulting from such damage will be the sole responsibility of the renter.

Refunds and Cancellations
All cancellations must be transmitted to the UK Inbound Reservations prior to the commencement of the rental. 

No Shows
During peak season full rental charges will apply to any booking where the customer no shows

Out of Hours Reservations
Out of hours collections and returns are on a request basis for all vehicle groups.  Out of hours will be charged to the customers credit card at £40.00 + VAT.  Please note that if the customer is picking up and returning out of hours, then they may incur two separate charges.

Fines and Driving Offences
Customers will be liable for any parking offences or traffic or congestion fines incurred against the rental vehicle whilst in their care.  All fines are subject to a locally determined administration fee.

Damage Charges
Customers will be liable for any damage to the rental vehicle whilst in their care.  All damage charges are subject to an administration fee which is variable and determined by cost of repair.

Please note that reservations made for airport locations without an arrival flight number will be treated as a walk-in to the branch.  Delivery or collections are not available.

The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier's rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.

While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.

Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.

Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice.

If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.

Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.

Vehicle capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.

Refund Policy
In the event of cancellation, any deposit amounts paid at the time of booking are non-refundable. 

If you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
